Our Story
What is "Kimono Pocket T-Shirts"?
Kimono Pocket T-Shirt is a modern everyday T-shirt featuring a pocket made from authentic vintage Japanese kimono (着物) fabric.
Each pocket is carefully cut from real kimono textiles — fabrics that carry tradition, celebration, and history. No two patterns are ever exactly alike.
We combine:
- Traditional Japanese kimono fabric
- Modern T-shirt design
- Comfortable everyday wearability
- Small-batch handmade production
The result is a simple and elegant T-shirt with a powerful story.
It’s a way to bring Japanese heritage into daily life.
Why Did I Start This Project?
I started this project with a simple question:
Why are so many beautiful kimonos forgotten and discarded?
Growing up in Japan, I saw how much meaning a kimono carries. Kimonos represent celebrations, family history, and craftsmanship passed down through generations. But today, many kimonos sit quietly in closets due to lack of opportunity to wear them in our daily lives. Some are never worn again. Some are even discarded.
When I moved to America, I began thinking about how I could share Japanese culture with the world in a more accessible way. I wanted to create something people could wear every day.
I had almost no sewing experience when I began. But I couldn’t ignore this idea. This project is my way of connecting tradition and daily life, and connecting Japan to the world, one T-shirt at a time.
How I Create Each Kimono Pocket T-Shirt
Every Kimono Pocket T-Shirt is created through a careful, hands-on process that respects the history of the fabric while ensuring modern durability and comfort.
Here is how each piece comes to life:
1. From Japan to My Studio: Sourcing and Transformation
I carefully source authentic vintage kimono in Japan. These garments are no longer worn yet rich in craftsmanship, history, and cultural beauty. Each piece is thoughtfully selected for its fabric quality, condition, and distinctive patterns. The kimono are then transported to the United States, where they begin a new chapter of transformation in my studio.
2. Gentle Cleaning & Fabric Inspection
Before any cutting takes place, each kimono is gently washed to preserve the integrity of the textile. During this step, I carefully check for:
- Color bleeding
- Fabric stretching
- Weak areas or damage
Only fabrics that meet quality standards move forward.
3. Low-Temperature Pressing
After drying, every kimono is pressed at a low temperature to maintain the delicate fibers and restore the fabric’s structure without stress.
4. Precision Cutting
The fabric is then measured and cut individually to match the exact pocket dimensions. Pattern placement is carefully considered so each pocket highlights the most beautiful part of the design.
5. Reinforcement for Durability
A lightweight interfacing is applied to the back of the kimono fabric. This step stabilizes the textile and ensures that the pocket maintains its shape over time while remaining soft and wearable.
6. Handcrafted Sewing
Each kimono pocket is sewn onto the T-shirt using precise stitching techniques. Alignment, symmetry, and clean finishing are carefully controlled throughout the process.
7. Final Check
Before shipping, each T-shirt is carefully reviewed to ensure it meets our quality expectations. I make sure the stitching is secure, the pocket is properly placed, and the overall finish is perfect before it reaches you.
8. Completion
With the final check complete, the piece is ready to begin its new life. A once-unworn kimono is given a new purpose; thoughtfully transformed, carefully finished, and prepared just for you.
