You Won’t Believe What’s Inside This Gachapon… 🎁
Gachapon is one of Japan’s most recognizable capsule toy experiences. You put in your money, turn the handle, and wait to see which capsule appears. Part of the fun is the surprise: you do not always know exactly what you will receive until the capsule drops.
For our upcoming Pop-Up at Taste of Japan, we wanted to bring that feeling of surprise and discovery into the world of vintage Japanese textiles. So we created something special: a Gachapon experience featuring one-of-a-kind badges made from authentic vintage kimono fabric sourced from Japan.
Instead of choosing your favorite badge from a display, you will spin the Gachapon and discover which unique piece finds you. ✨
It is a small experience, but it reflects something we love about Japanese culture and vintage textiles: every piece has its own character, history, color, and texture.
What Is Gachapon? 🇯🇵
In Japan, capsule toy machines are commonly known as Gachapon. The name is associated with the sounds of the experience: the “gacha” of turning the machine and the “pon” of the capsule dropping out.
Gachapon became a major part of Japan’s capsule toy culture, offering small collectibles in a format built around anticipation and surprise. Bandai, one of Japan’s major toy companies, entered the capsule toy market with Gashapon in 1977, and the format has since become widely recognized both in Japan and overseas.
Today, capsule toys can feature an enormous variety of objects and themes, from character goods and miniatures to unusual everyday items. The appeal is not only the object itself, but also the anticipation of discovering what is inside.
A Gachapon Inspired by Vintage Kimono 🧵
At Second Bloom Tokyo, we are inspired by the beauty of vintage Japanese textiles and the stories they carry. For this special event, we are bringing that idea together with the playful experience of Gachapon.
Inside our Gachapon are Kimono fabric badges made from authentic vintage kimono pieces sourced from Japan.
Because the badges are made from vintage kimono fabric, each one is unique. Different sections of fabric can feature different colors, patterns, textures, and details. That means no two badges are ever exactly the same.
The Fun Is in the Surprise 🎁
One of the things that makes Gachapon exciting is that you do not get to choose exactly what comes out of the machine.
We wanted to keep that element of surprise for our vintage kimono fabric badges.
- Spin the Gachapon.
- Watch your capsule drop.
- Open it and discover your one-of-a-kind kimono fabric badge.
You may have a favorite color or pattern in mind, but you will not know which piece you will receive until the moment you open the capsule. That makes every badge a small discovery.
Giving Vintage Kimono Fabric a New Story ✨
Vintage kimono fabric can contain beautiful patterns and textile details that deserve to be appreciated beyond their original use. By turning small sections of authentic vintage kimono into badges, we can highlight these details in a simple, approachable way.
Each badge becomes more than a small accessory. It becomes a tiny piece of Japanese textile history that can be discovered, carried, and enjoyed in everyday life.
This is part of what inspires Second Bloom Tokyo: finding new ways to appreciate vintage Japanese textiles and connect their beauty with modern life.
