If you've only seen kimono fabric on a screen, this is a good chance to see the colors up close and feel the silk in your hands.

What Is Nakamise Street?

The name comes from Nakamise-dori in Asakusa, Tokyo. It's the shopping street that runs from Kaminarimon Gate up to Hozomon Gate at Senso-ji Temple, lined with around 90 small shops selling snacks, souvenirs and traditional goods. It's often called one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, with roots going back to the 17th century.

At OC Japan Fair, NAKAMISE Street is presented by KIMONO CON, a California nonprofit started in 2024 to share kimono and Japanese culture through events and workshops. Its president, Saya Kawai, describes it as "our way of bringing a piece of Asakusa to Southern California."

Over the three days, the area will have kabuki, rakugo storytelling, taiko drumming, a shishimai lion dance, bon dance and Japanese dance, along with an Omotesenke tea ceremony demonstration, calligraphy and ikebana. There will also be vendors with kimono, haori, vintage textiles and handcrafts, and plenty of Japanese sweets and matcha.
