Kiku, the Chrysanthemum of the Japanese Imperial Crest

Against deep black silk, a great chrysanthemum unfolds in layered rings of gold, coral, and silvery gray, its petals radiating outward in near-perfect symmetry, while gilded leaves and a trailing vine of small white blossoms curve gently across the darkness. This radiating form recalls kiku, the chrysanthemum brought to Japan from China in the Nara period and celebrated in Heian court poetry until Emperor Go-Toba adopted it as his own emblem, so tied to the throne that a sixteen-petaled kiku still marks the Imperial Seal of Japan today. Set here against midnight silk rather than the crest's usual gold, that same flower once reserved for emperors opens quietly across the weave, carrying a small trace of imperial elegance into everyday hands.
