Hana Zukushi, A Medley of Japanese Flowers
Plum blossoms in white, gold, and violet cluster along slender branches at the top of the pocket, while below, a bellflower's purple stars, a golden chrysanthemum, and wisteria's pale cascading clusters bloom together across the same warm silk. Known as hana zukushi, this gathering of flowers from different seasons, ume in late winter, kikyo and kiku in autumn, fuji in spring, is a device kimono designers have used for centuries so that a single design might be admired at any time of year rather than tied to one season alone. Brought together here, these blossoms carry forward Japan's old delight in the beauty of every turning season, gathered all at once.
