Ume, the Japanese Plum Blossom
Small five petaled blossoms in white, gold, and deep violet scatter along slender branches dotted with tiny green buds, drifting across a warm rust ground like the first blooms breaking through late winter cold. Known in Japan as ume, the plum blossom was so beloved before the Heian period that the word for flower once referred to ume alone, and it has long been planted near shrines as a protective charm believed to ward off misfortune. Blooming before all other flowers each year, ume still carries its old, quiet promise that renewal always follows even the harshest season.
