Oshima Tsumugi, the Mud-Dyed Silk of Amami
Fine flecks of white, blue, and soft red scatter evenly across the deep brown-black silk, gathering here and there into small, quiet clusters rather than forming any single picture, a restrained geometric rhythm rather than a scene. This kind of small, evenly repeated dot and cross pattern is typical of the geometric kasuri designs developed in Oshima Tsumugi, a silk woven on the Amami islands whose deep, glossy color comes from repeatedly soaking thread in a tannin bath from the sharinbai shrub and then working it into iron-rich local mud. Woven by hand through a process demanding enough to be counted among the world's finest textiles, it carries forward centuries of patience and the quiet, earthbound beauty of the islands where it was born.
