Matsu ni Tsuru, Cranes over Snow-Covered Pines

Snow rests in soft white tufts on layered pine boughs beneath a pale lilac sky as a crane glides overhead, and on the other face red, white, and purple chrysanthemums bloom among bush clover and autumn grasses while another crane sweeps low. In Japan the pine and the crane have long been paired as emblems of longevity, the evergreen pine standing firm through the winter cold and the crane said to live a thousand years. Moving from winter pines to autumn flowers, the bag seems to carry the turning of the seasons and an old wish for a long and peaceful life.
