Shiki no Hana, the Flowers of the Four Seasons in Linked Roundel Medallions

Round medallions open across the woven ground like windows onto different seasons: blue blossoms rising above green hills, chrysanthemums drifting beside a curling wave, and a maple branch glowing beside flowers gathered in a woven basket, each circle joined to the next by a fine golden lattice. Together these scenes appear to evoke shiki no hana, the flowers of the four seasons, a theme long favored in kimono and obi weaving for gathering spring, summer, autumn, and winter into a single cloth so that no one blossom is left waiting for its turn.
