Fūjin Raijin, the Wind God and Thunder God
On pale golden silk, a green wind god strides forward with his billowing wind bag while a pale thunder god leaps within a ring of small drums, both figures drifting among stylized clouds woven in moss green, ochre, and deep red. Fūjin and Raijin have long been honored in Japan as the deities who command wind and thunder, and since Tawaraya Sōtatsu painted them on a celebrated pair of folding screens in the early Edo period, the two have remained among the most beloved images in Japanese art, traditionally linked with timely rain and abundant harvests.
