Delicate grasses and small blossoms scatter across a warm rust ground, white chrysanthemum like flowers, tiny clustered blue blooms, and golden petaled flowers mingling together as though gathered from a single autumn field. This gentle mixture evokes akikusa, the autumn grasses motif inspired by aki no nanakusa, the seven flowers of autumn first named in an eighth century poem from Japan's oldest anthology, the Man'yoshu, and prized purely for the quiet pleasure of noticing them bloom. Carried into textile design for centuries, this scattering of autumn flowers still holds Japan's old habit of pausing to cherish a season before it passes.
