Kiku, the Japanese Chrysanthemum
Rendered entirely in white and silver, large chrysanthemum blossoms open across the silk, their pointed petals catching the light through a play of woven textures, fine checks, stripes, and small diamonds seeming to shift within each petal like pieces of a quiet mosaic. The chrysanthemum, or kiku, came to Japan from China around the Nara and Heian periods and was long regarded as a flower of longevity, later becoming the emblem of the imperial family from the Kamakura period onward. Woven in tone-on-tone white, the flower loses none of its dignity, only its color, carrying forward a wish for grace and long life that has outlasted centuries of changing fashion.
