Shishin, the Four Guardian Beasts
A striped tiger, a crimson bird with sweeping plumes, a tortoise entwined with a serpent, and a green dragon wander across the ivory silk among small scattered treasures, each creature woven in muted plum, rust, sage, and gold. These are the Shishin, the four guardian beasts of East Asian tradition who watch over the four directions, the Azure Dragon of the east, the Vermilion Bird of the south, the White Tiger of the west, and the Black Tortoise of the north, painted on the walls of Japan's ancient Kitora Tomb more than 1,300 years ago.
