Marumon, the Japanese Floral Medallion
Small blossoms in coral, gold, and crimson scatter densely across the black silk, while several perfect circles enclose a single stylized flower at their center, resting among the blooms like tiny medallions. Known as marumon, these circular motifs trace back to decorative roundels that arrived in Japan from China and the Middle East during the Nara period, later reshaped by the Heian court into flowers and creatures native to Japan, and favored ever since on formal robes and Noh costumes. Carried forward through more than a thousand years of textile art, marumon still lends this small pocket a quiet echo of imperial elegance.
