Kiku Karakusa, the Chrysanthemum Vine Motif
Large, layered chrysanthemum blossoms unfurl in dense golden clusters across the ivory silk, their petals stacked in soft rounded tiers, while thin scrolling tendrils drift quietly through the open space between them. The chrysanthemum, or kiku, arrived in Japan from China around the Nara and Heian periods and came to be seen as a flower of longevity, later adopted as the emblem of the imperial family from the Kamakura period onward, and it remains one of Japan's most admired symbols of elegance and endurance. Passed down through centuries of textile art, the chrysanthemum still carries that same quiet dignity, a small bloom of grace and long life resting on this pocket.
