Kiku, the Japanese Chrysanthemum
Woven entirely in soft ivory, large chrysanthemum blooms overlap and layer across the silk, their round petals rendered in a quiet mix of textures, some smooth and satin-like, others finely striped or dotted, so the flowers seem to shift and catch the light as the fabric moves. The chrysanthemum, or kiku, came to Japan from China around the Nara and Heian periods and was long regarded as a flower of longevity, later becoming the emblem of the imperial family from the Kamakura period onward. Kept to a single tone, the design lets texture rather than color carry the flower's meaning, passing along a quiet wish for grace and long life that has endured for centuries.
