Genji-guruma, the Heian Court Carriage Wheel
Woven in soft ivory, a single spoked wheel turns quietly at the edge of the silk, its hub curling inward like a small whirlpool, while flowing floral shapes drift around it across the rest of the fabric. Known as genji-guruma, or sometimes katawaguruma, this wheel motif recalls the ox-drawn carriages of Heian-period nobility, whose wooden wheels were removed and soaked in a river's current when not in use, to keep them from drying out and cracking. Often set among flowing water or blossoms just as it appears here, the wheel has long carried a quiet reflection on the passage of time, a graceful, unhurried image of court life turning gently forward.
