Kiku, the Japanese Chrysanthemum
Woven entirely in white, a large chrysanthemum spreads its pointed petals across the upper half of the silk, each one filled with a different fine texture, checks, stripes, small woven dots, while long sweeping leaves curve beneath it like feathers caught mid-motion. The chrysanthemum, or kiku, arrived in Japan from China around the Nara and Heian periods and was long believed to bring long life, a belief that helped make it the emblem of the imperial family from the Kamakura period onward. Held to a single tone, the flower relies on texture alone to hold the eye, carrying forward a quiet wish for grace and longevity that has outlasted centuries of changing fashion.
