Oshima Tsumugi, the Mud-Dyed Silk of Amami
Bold, angular shapes interlock across the silk in pale blue against warm brown-gray, their crossing lines and hexagonal turns building a large geometric rhythm that evokes the interlocking form of a tortoise shell, or kikko, long regarded in Japan as a shape of stability and protection. This striking, large-scale geometry is achieved through kasuri, a technique in which thread is dyed before weaving, and it appears here in Oshima Tsumugi, a silk from the Amami islands whose deep, earthy color comes from repeatedly working thread through a tannin bath from the sharinbai shrub and iron-rich local mud. Woven by hand through a process demanding enough to be counted among the world's finest textiles, it carries forward centuries of patience and the quiet, earthbound beauty of the islands where it was born.
