Kanoko Shibori, the Fawn-Spot Tie-Dye
Tiny pale rings scatter evenly across the deep crimson silk, each one slightly open like a small crescent, repeating so closely together that the whole surface seems to ripple with quiet texture. This dotted effect is known as kanoko shibori, named for its resemblance to the pale spots on a young deer's back, and it is traditionally made by pinching and binding tiny points of silk before dyeing, so that each bound spot resists the color and remains pale once untied. Prized since the Edo period for the extraordinary hand labor it demands, kanoko shibori carries forward a texture that cannot be printed or faked, only patiently tied, one small circle at a time.
