Kikkō Hanabishi, the Flower-Filled Tortoiseshell Lattice

Pale silver hexagons, each outlined in fine embroidered thread, tile quietly across the tote's front, and within several of them clusters of small chrysanthemum-like blooms open in warm orange, cream, and soft green. This hexagon lattice recalls kikkō, the tortoiseshell pattern that took its geometry from the tortoise's shell and, following the old saying that "the crane lives a thousand years, the tortoise ten thousand," came to stand for longevity, prosperity, and harmony in the home; when flowers are set within each hexagon, as they appear to be here, the design is known more specifically as kikkō hanabishi. Carried in this pale, blossom-filled form rather than bold color, that wish for a long and flourishing life travels quietly along on a bag built for daily use.
